The hook is easy: spend in our store and you don’t have to pay anything for a year! How amazing is
that concept! I get to walk into a store, get out with a couch, or mattress, or oven and pay nothing!
That all sounds too good to be true.
The fact of the matter is, it both is and isn’t too good to be true.
What is true
When you look at the fine print of what is being offered, you will realize that everything advertised is
actually true. You do get 0% interest rate on your purchase for 12 months (if that was the deal) or you
do get to walk out the store with a bran new purchase whilst not having spent a single penny (for
those who remember that currency).
All these offers are real.
The companies aren’t trying to scam you out of your money, their goal is simply to get you to spend
your money at their store instead of their competitors. Fair enough in my opinion.
What you need to watch out for in your bill
You just need to get into such purchases understanding ALL the terms and conditions. 12 months
without a single payment to dish out is amazing. What happens at month 13th day 1? This is the
question you must ask yourself. Well, often times, theses types of offers come with clauses that go
something like this: through the 12 months where you’ve got nothing to pay, we are going to be
accumulating the equivalent of 28% interest rate on the entire amount of your purchase. If you pay
before the end of month 12, you will not get any interest rate charges put onto your purchase.
However, if at the end of the 12 months, you haven’t paid the ENTIRE purchase, you then will owe us
that initial purchase amount AND that 28% that we will have charged you from the very beginning.
