The environment and our use of plastic has come into the public light as an environmental issue in recent years. Most of us are now aware through public awareness that plastic hurts the environment. Indeed, plastic creates waste and can take a thousand years to decompose. Yes, you read correctly: that plastic water bottle you just used will be around beyond your great-great-grandchildren’s lifespan. Often, plastic water bottles as well as various plastic debris not only end up in our landfills, but in our ocean. It is contaminating our planet in more than one way. Let’s save our environment and oceans.
Without being an environmental nut, there are small things we can all do to save our environment and oceans, as a bonus: it can also save you money!
Here are some tips that will help you save money, the environment, and the ocean.
Tip #1: Water filtration
One reason people chose to use plastic water bottles is that they don’t like the taste of tap water. That is a reasonable justification and you just in fact might not have water that matches your taste buds’ preferences. Consider alternatives, they are out there. Water filtration system will filter out that taste that many find unpleasant. This can be on a small scale like Brita that you can fill up and put in your fridge, or a home filtration system that will filter all water coming into your home, or on one specific tap. These systems will cost you some money up front, but not nearly as much as your plastic water bottles over the long term.
Tip #2: Reusable cleaning supplies save money and the environment
When you tally it up, cleaning supplies can end up costing a lot of money. That is partly due to the fact that they are disposable: disposable bottles, flushable toilet cleaners, etc. Buying a bottle that you will then fill up yourself with your product will reduce how much you throw out, as well as how much you spend. There are so many great home-made cleaning product recipes out there that are just as effective.
Tip #3: Buying from a bulk store help save money
Bulk stores usually allow you to come to the store with your reusable containers. This avoids extra plastic packaging, and you get to save money because everything is usually cheaper in bulk! What a great way to save money and feel good about what you are doing to help the environment and our oceans!
